This extremely shy fish is clearly visible in natural pools of sea water on low tide in Kilkee County Clare. Nesting in the pristine sea grass or seaweed of the famous Pollock Holes, seahorses use their tail to cling onto seaweed, as they are pretty poor swimmers and don’t venture too far from the coast as they would be unable to handle the strong currents as the tides turn in the Atlantic. This piece of bog oak reminds me of that delicate, almost featherlike, demeanour of this elegant fish in a distant trance.
