In the horrific years of 1845-46-47, famine spread rapidly through the Western Counties of Ireland and the only salvation was immigration. Indeed, many of the immigrants did not survive the appalling conditions aboard these ‘coffin ships’ as they set sail to the New World. This piece reminds me of a remnant of a coffin ship with its torn sail and wailing face looking despondently out to sea. It’s as if there is no hope for this ship and its cargo.
