Historically, Irish people have carried a lot of superstitions through their daily lives. From seasonal changes to unusual animal behavior, Irish rural people identified with their surroundings through various signs of imminent change. In circumstances of poor crop harvest, such as the Famine of 1845–47, neighbors could identify that death was not far away and often left entire families to die in cottages as they could not afford a funeral to the cemetery. This elongated figure represents a ghostly, haunted face that symbolizes this sad event in Irish history.
